Oil based dyes seem to work better for me, I think there is more pigment in them. To avoid getting grubby handprints try washing your hands! I usually use a Saddle Tan or Black dye that cover up any marks.

Re: which leather dye for sheaths

    thanks for the replies guys
the leather does look clean and yes i do wash my hands but, when i dye the leather it comes out blotchy and some parts of the leather do not seem to want to take the dye, i was thinking it might have been sweat or oil secreted from my mitts,
the dye im using is waterbased, so i will try some oil based and get a bottle of the stuff (forget its name) for preping leather prior to dying
    thanks again

I find that the feibings professional oil dye is the best, If you are going to do
lots of leather work (when I say lots I mean more than 2 or 3 sheaths) it works out a lot cheaper in the 32oz bottle than the 4oz one.
Also a good way not to get marks on the leather is buy a pack of latex gloves. (if your not allergic that is!)
Apparently wiping the leather with a damp cloth is supposed to give a more even colour although I am yet to do this.

    Have a look here Steve
There is a product called a degreaser, which you may want to try
I've always used the Fieblings range shown and I wipe the leather with a damp sponge first as I find I can get a more even coverage.
Buying a large bottle makes sense but be careful you don't knock it over, makes one h*ll of a mess (ask me how I know )
