    Larger camping stoves

All the stoves I have are small backpacking types which run on small expensive canisters. I want to get a larger stove, ideal for car camping which will run off larger (say 4.5kg) butane or propane bottles.

Anyone have experiences of particular models and care to recommend one?

I was thinking of getting this Tilley but it went for more than I wanted to pay.

    Criteria:
    1. Runs off economical gas bottles (say 4.5kg)
    2. Packs away nicely
    3. 2 burners
    4. Grill would be a plus

Are the certain makes I should be looking for - can be modern or vintage, I don't mind as long is it's functional.

    Cheers, Phil

I have had one of these for about 5 years now and it is great the griddle works really well and it all packs down easily, you can get a version with removable legs as well.

    Re: Larger camping stoves

Not quite what you were after - but what about a Coleman 2 burner or 3 burner camping stove ?

From what I can gather they run on either Coleman fuel or unleaded ...

I've got a Camping Gaz 2 burner stove (with grill) and whilst it's good I hate lugging around the associated gas bottle that comes with it - it just takes up so much room in the boot of the car.

    Cheers

Like others I've got one of these:

Also got a carry case for it to make it more luggable. Don't know how big my gas bottle is for it bit it doesn't take up too much room in the car.

Phil, if you want to try before you buy feel free to nip round sometime and I'll set it up for you.

    Re: Larger camping stoves

Just a thought on the coleman stove.

The single small burner ones seem to work very well when working properly but seem to get clogged up fairly quickly when using normal fuel. I/my parents have one as does my brother and they've both needed stripping down and cleaning.
I don't mind pumping it up when camping and don't normally need to do it much if I'm just heating soup but I'm not sure I'd want to faff about with it if I had the option of using large gass powered stoves. I have no idea if you need to pump them up more or less often. It has a bigger tank but if your using both rings and cooking things that take longerit may get annoying.
My sister and husband have the double burner one so I can find out how they get on with it.

    Re: Larger camping stoves

I have used most types of stove and any that use the light weight screw on type gas canister are usually OK. Petrol and paraffin are usually very heavy to transport and have volitilily issues. If static camping is in order then all the Dual burner types that are gas powered are more than adiquate. For high numbers camping (20+) we tend to use the cast iron burner rings that they use to heat up tarmack for the roads. These run on propane and get very warm very quickly.

    Re: Larger camping stoves

another vote for the coleman - probably the worlds only device that is cheaper to run on petrol than gas! i've had mine for about 3 years now, and i find it excellent. never needed to strip it down - if it looks like it's getting a bit clogged, i just throw a little bit of redex in the tank and burn it off for 20 minutes. a fully pumped tank is usually sufficient to cook a full meal without re-pressurising, but if the pressure does start to drop, 10 seconds pumping is all thats needed.
the second burner runs at a slightly lower pressure than the main burner, but it makes no difference in practice. you can buy an adaptor that uses a CO2 air rifle cartridge instead of the pump to maintain constant pressure in the tank if the pumping is a problem
