Re: fish trap
You can get one for free specilfically for catching signal crayfish issued at the PO on behalf of the EA, however where local fishing clubs have the rights they may get up set with you for distrubing the swims alot of the lenghts of the UK's rivers fishings rights are now held by clubs so find out first.
Ass regards to the traps dont waste your time making that.
Buy two ploy coated wiremesh bind for each trap you want to make stich them together with some thick fishing line (i use strimmer line for mine) cut a slit in one of the botomms and open it up towards the inside, bit of twisted wire thresded from either side to hold the bait in the middle and pesto.
Takes less than 5mins to build cost less than £2-3 and have caught 100's of the beaties with mine, it dont have to look pritty

Re: fish trap
There are not illegal and are openly encourage as previously mention SIGNAL crayfish is what your after, the Yank cousin that has devastated the indigenous crayfish (much smaller) and undermines the banks of the waterways. When you catch these you are at the trap and watching they are not chucked in and left to be collected latter 9not how i use them anyhow). I can only surmise that the traps that are mentioned must be a different type as the EA issue the licence to take the crayfish free to encourage people to kill them.

Re: fish trap
There was a thread on BB not so long ago where it was mentioned that although you may catch crayfish (encouraged to take the signal species out of our waterways), you are not allowed to take out the local inhabitants in most parts of the country. You are also required to have a licence which is issued by DEFRA, and which costs zero to obtain. If you are caught with a crayfish trap without the licence to take them you are in trouble. I'd suggest a lookup on the forum for the thread, and then a followup with DEFRA.
To fish in any way requires the express permission of the owner of the fishing rights for that stretch of water - if you think you may tread on the toes of local fishermen - get the permission in writing. The landowner (who would have the right to water his cattle/sheep) does not necessarily own the fishing rights. All waterway fishing rights in the country are owned. All are governed by the national water authority.
Hope this helps.Last edited by Jeannius61; 16-07-08 at 08:43 AM.

Re: fish trap
If you've got permission, no problem. If you haven't, you're poaching, for which not so long ago you'd be hung, drawn, quartered and then sent to Australia. You can't wander onto someone's river and start fishing without permission - with a trap or with a rod and line - any more than you can wander onto random land and start shooting rabbits.
Rules (where they exist) are much more relaxed if you plan to use a single trap in the sea. Generally it's OK, occasionally there are local by-laws.

Re: fish trap
I thought it was a trap specifically for eels. What kind of fish would you catch in a trap like that. Assuming you had permission etc.

Re: fish trap
I've aleways wanted to do this and started looking at a licence (when the problem of US Signal Crayfish was first publicised on TV). The trouble was that the licence application procedure was that onerous, I got put off the whole thing. I hope it's a bit more relaxed these days. I'd love to go down to the river and haul in a big bucket of "crawdads" and then go off and try some creole recipes. Yummy!

Re: fish trap
True, a tad frustrating at times. But if there were a few more people that thought like you..............
.............there'd be no crayfish left, mate!
I fly fish, and there's a stack more trout and salmon than there are crayfish........but fly fishing is tightly controlled and regulated everywhere you go, only a certain number of kills are allowed, some are catch-and-return.
In our big seas around our coast even lobster potting is licensed.......only a certain number allowed along each stretch of coastline.
Now, if you went to South Africa..................
