    Re: Birds,bugs etc,around us!!

More and more fabulous shots are added to this thread every time I look. I'm almost sorry to add my meager efforts to it.

I spotted this little fellow hovering over something in the grass on the coast of south Wales, I'm no good with birds of prey can someone identify it for me?

Sorry for the picture quality I wasn't set up for wildlife, I'd been shooting my friends throwing themselves into the sea, the top one is a blown up crop from another shot because I couldn't get close enough for the zoom.

    Re: Birds,bugs etc,around us!!

If it was hovering it is likely to be a kestrel and looking at your pictures I would say it is female due to the colour of the head. Hard to tell. A nice picture seeing as you weren't set up for it.

    Re: Birds,bugs etc,around us!!

    Thanks Simon

It was stock still in the air with its wings spread just like that for quite long periods (Which is how I could get any pictures at all), we were right on the cliffs so there was probably quite an updraft. It just sat there, then slipped the air from under its wings and dropped, to swoop up and round to hover again slightly further round the cliff.

I've got to find out where we were (We were basically kidnapped by some girls for the weekend) and go back more set up for mooching around the hills with a camera, it's quite a place.

That kestrel shot is quite good considdering you were not really prepared for distant shots!!In flight bird shots are not easy!!Focusing sometimes gets erratic, and if you use long focal lenses it is tough to keep them in the frame!!Looking forward to more of your pictures!!
Thank you Simon for identifying the kestrel!!
    Regards!!

Some nice Miami lizard pictures Albert, were there a lot of them around?

I saw a kingfisher hovering over the river the other day and I've been going back with my camera but I haven't seen him again yet.

    Just some swans again

And an Autumn butterfly resting in the sun

not really birds and bugs but took these on dartmoor in august only on a compact cannon ixus 100is but a really smart little camera i recon

Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to think that there are fairys at the bottom of it.
