    Just completed today!

It is 36" overall length and weighs just 2 1/4lbs

Balance point is right at the cross for the makers mark. Handles like a wee dream

    Construction materials are -

Blade - EN45 spring steel. Handground, sanded and sharpened. Tang tapering to 8mm round section, through pommel and peened over.

Hilt - Handground from 1" square mild steel block.

Pommel - Cast iron from carved wooden master.

Grip - Pine sandwich with black suede wrapping.

    Thanks for the comments guys!

Those shots were taken last night in the armoury, not such good quality, so here`s a few more that show it in better light -

It`s a sharpie for a collector, though would cut nicely.

    Hi Rick,

The pommel was made by carving a master copy in wood and then having it cast in iron. Filed, sanded and drilled to finish

    Hi Mac!
Does that mean you carve it in (which) wood, then make a copy from clay, How'zit made? Need to cast a pommel in bronze for my schiavona some point and have no clue!

    Re: C14th Single Handed Broadsword

    Hi Rick,

It was carved in this case in oak, though any carveable wood will do for a master copy (though I find pine not so ideal, as the grain tends to affect the finished surface a little much).

From there, I hand the masters over to my local foundry (http://www.laingsfoundry.co.uk/profile.htm), which specialises in traditional sand casting.

Once cast, the pommel is then drilled, filed and sanded to finish.

Sorry I can`t shed more light on the actual casting process. Might be a good question for other members who do their own.
