    Re: Sheffield Carving Sets

    Hello,

I've just acquired a Wostenholm & Son carving set and I'll be posting pics tomorrow in the morning. But I wanted to ask you chaps a few questions the set I have has the original box, case for the set, and the set it self. I've done some research regarding the age of my set, and I'm not a 100% about this but from the markings on the blade are as follows (in order listed on the blade) HG, symbol of a crown, symbol of a lion, and the letter D. After doing a bit of googling I believe the set is from 1758. So my questions are, is it actually possible for the set to be from 1758? Did Wostenholm & Son even exist then? How much would this set be worth?

I'll be posting pics first thing tomorrow morning, it's currently too dark to take a photograph.

    Thank you,

    Canadablade

    Re: Sheffield Carving Sets

Good day all. I have a Wheatly Brothers carving set that has been passed down to me, can any one help me with a little back ground. I tried to up load photos, however that didn't work out to well. It is marked as wheat sheath "the carver". The hallmarks the makers mark JB on the fork and HG on the knife and steel. A crown (Sheffield) a lion, paw raised. And a Q in a box (1908 due to no tarrif stamp?) It has stag horm handles uncapped. My question is, in part, what is silver if the handle has no cap? Any info would be great! Thanks all!

    Re: Sheffield Carving Sets

Hi all, having read all posts on this thread I too am now amazed at the work that went into these sets.

I too have a Sheffield made carving set and require further information as no
Mention of this one on here:

I have a originally boxed set ( cardboard box)
Now states "Carvers" " made in Sheffield•England
Warranted hand ground stainless steel, real stag handle.

Inside a three set carving set carver marked " HALLSIGN J HURST & Co, cutlers Sheffield, hand ground, FIRTH stainless...

Does anyone have any knowledge of this? Looks old but could be due to the old box?

    Re: Sheffield Carving Sets

    Hello!

It sounds like I have close to the same set as Canadablade, with a few years difference. Carving knife, sharpener, and fork. Markings on knife blade are "Tally-Ho", "G.Wostenholm & Son", "Sheffield.Eng". The silver band down by the handle has the markings of "JY" "(a crown)" "(lion passant? three feet down, forepaw up?)" and what looks like a "D" with a flourish or tail? I put each separate metal stamp in "" here. This set has been heavily used (downright grungy), and if there was supposed to be a running fox above the "Tally-Ho", he's long gone. I didn't want to "clean" anything until I found out something about it. Initially, what got my attention were the stag horn handles... then upon closer inspection, I noticed the hallmarks on the silver and began my search. Great site you have here!!

    Re: Sheffield Carving Sets

Fine collection of carving sets. Time to add in mine, a ‘timeworn treasured’ Alfred Williams Carving Set made in Sheffield, England. It’s on the low end of the Sheffield Carving Set production line yet I wouldn’t wish for anything different, I quite love the character andfeel of the old well-loved and used set. Carving knife, meat fork, blade sharpener and box.

Rather love the teeth marks, mice? left on the antler handle below...
