    Lightbulb Simple blade grinding jig

Here's the jig I used to regrind the tip of a knife blade:

I recommend against attempting this without a jig of some sort, because you'll just stuff it up.

I put two pins into the corners of a block of Simon's excellent beech plywood (no worries, it doesn't destroy the block and it'll be used for a handle one day). The block is better than a typical Vise Grip, because it's position is more flexible. The vertical clearance is important too, because it allows you to lower the handle, raising the tip to keep the bevel on the belt at the right angle.

To set up, place the back of the blade against a pin and push the blade bevel flush with the belt. This sets the angle. Now, G-clamp the block in place.

When grinding a straight section, you go across both pins, and only use one pin for each side of the tip. I like to mount the sander low and look forn from above where I can see where the action is - the metal leaving the bevel as the belt does the work.

SAFETY FIRST: Make sure you clean out your sander before you start grinding. Wood powder air suspensions ignite and burn readily and piles of dust can smoulder for hours before flaming. And when you see the sparks flying off the face of that carbon steel, you'll understand why you don't mix wood dust and steel sparks.

It's funny, but I was just searching for a blade jig and I completely forgot about this one or how effective it was.

    Thank You!
I have been looking for something like this and this may be it.
I made my first knifebevel with just a file, worked well but was a lot of work.
Second knife I used a beltsander wich was a lot faster but I could only get a big angle on the bevel. I'm going to be trying these.

Although the 1st jig seems very simple I do believe that it worked very well. It still allows for a free movement but keeps it under control.

Iv started using a door hinge super glued at the angle you want, then clamp the knife to the hinge. not perfect but better than using files like i used to.

    Seagull,

is yours standing free on the wood block? You keep it there by hand?

Not interested in selling me one, by any chance

    Barney,
I would hate to bother you, but if you are making two jigs , would you consider making three. I would also like to have a budget idea.
    Thank you in advance
