SHEFFIELD, ENG." - lengthwise on blade,
and: "I*XL" - perpendicular on base of blade at hilt.

i have a wostenholm hunting knife that was handed down to us am interested in some info. it is about six inches long,has a leather wrapped handle and has nimrod etched in blade. any info would be nice

Anyone have any thoughts about this knife which I found while clearing out an old garden shed?

It is a brass front and rear bolster with an ebony and ivory handle. The blade has a serrated spine and the markings

it has a solid brass holster which has a stitched leather surround

I have in my possession what I think is a nice Wostenholm set, a sort of family heirloom. I wonder if any of you learned people can tell me more about the set. There are there pieces, a knife fork and a sharpening piece. All have bone (antler) handles. The fork is stamped 'ENG', the knife is stamped 'ULMER' and the sharpener is stamped, 'G WOSTENHOLM & SON' and 'MADE IN ENGLAND'. These have been in the family for a very long time and I've been trying to research the history of the set.

If the trio started out in life as a proper matching set, the knife would have had the same fittings as the fork and sharpening steel - i.e. a cap and a ferrule - plus the same shape stag handle.
What seems most likely to have happened is that the knife handle has been broken and replaced at some time; or more likely, in view of the odd 'ULMER' marking, the entire knife is a replacement.

Hi all. I found you while doing a google search on a knife just given to me by my father, which was his father's. I'm told that my grandfather was using it in Africa (in the now-Zimbabwe area) in the 1930's, but its origin is unknown. This looks like the place to get some great answers, so here goes with the pics:

I thought I'd seen the 'ULMER' mark before.
Adolph Ulmer became C.F. Ulmer after 1890 trading in PE USA in German imports. Ceased trading in 1928 so the knife is at least 84 years old.

Thanks for replying OWDTOM. Wow, so the blade is an old one though not from the original set. Makes sense now why it looks so different. What would you guess in the approx. vintage of the two pieces which are Wostenholm? I intend to keep these as the were my Grandfather's whether they are valuable or not, its just fascinating to learn more about them. I do know he brought them over from Greece with him when he was younger, well prior to WW2.

Thank you for the copy of the page from the brochure smiling knife. Ron Flooks book describes them as Royal Navy Deck Knives but it makes good commercial sense for them to be sold as hunting knives as well.

They made two versions

Here are my IXLs,I would like to know approximate ages. I think I might be able to date the composition,but not as good as some here.

OWDTOM ,the second one might be one of those that sneaked over to the USA,it is virtually mint.














I know that is not much of a picture on the big 13.2cm folder.

I had not planned to inquire about it,if needed I can fetch other pictures .

I have another very old big jack labeled Sheffield over England only.I would like input about it also.Where is the appropriate thread?
