Harris Stalking Day 26-01-09

Myself and Andy6430 off the forum went Deer stalking again last Monday 26th January , After an unsuccessful stalk a couple of weeks earlier were we covered 10 miles over the hills ,this time we had some success , we managed to shoot 6 hinds between us (Andy 5 and myself 1) and carried 4 of them down the hill in relays the 1 1/2 miles to the road(there is a cull on at the minute thats why 6 were shot) ,a great day stalking ,Big thanks to Andy for taking me , cant wait till next time . hope photos dont offend ,

They were lumping each carcass a mile and a half down to the road - Any weight you can save is a bonus. And those weren't small hinds either! Excellent effort lads, I'm tinged green at the minute....

Rifle calibre is good old 6.5x55 Swede, easy on the shoulder, accurate and efficient.

As megalift rightly says, any weight you can save is a help
Meat is superb, I don't tend to hang them for too long, about 5 days is about right, depending on the weather. Then bone it all out ready for the freezer ( I have 5 freezers here at the house, for venison, beef, pork and lamb all home produced/slaughtered and butchered, welcome to the goodlife )

And I love that swede! Punches well above it's "weight" for penetration without kicking. Not bad for a >100yr old round!

Yes!!Great caliber!!Very accurate,almost no kick!!No wonder it was used for international target!!Does not destroy nice meat either!!
5 freezers is a supply for a long while!!!!

I'm assuming you gralloched (I love that word - I'd say "gutted" but it's just not got the sound) them in the field...
...How do you avoid getting a bloody mess down your back when piggybacking?

Going on a stalk is a long held ambition of mine - I'd truly love to have the opportunity to take such a magnificent and useful creature - but as I've not done it yet, some of the finer details, like above, are somewhat alien to me.

[IMG][IMG][/IMG][/IMG]Hi great stalk me and a few mates were shooting an estate called glen artney today managed 6 hinds too. i shot 3 mate dunc 1 and mick and paul 1 each too coverd about 8 1/2 miles on hill today and weather was great apart from a bit of fog in morning. the stalk me and dunc had took around 45min belly down for around 1000 yards crawld up a burn then came down on top of a group around 40 hinds and calfs. all shots were placed in either head or neck i was shooting with my custom 6.5 284 and dunc his sako 25.06 fin lite drag was not to bad as were on a really steep slope .where ponys were at bottom. nice finish to or hind season were i managed to shoot (cull) 36 myself this year hope you like photos cheers Paul Harris
