Thumbs up Review of Longstrider's sharpening service

Just a quick write up to (a) publicly thank Longstrider for the excellent work he's done for me, and (b) recommend him to anyone on the forum who didn't know that he provides a sharpening service.

I just received my gunkoted friction folder made by Deviant11 back from Longstrider and all I can say is WOW.

It was pretty damn sharp when I received it from the maker, but I found that the slightly recurved tip section of the blade was a bit of a pain to sharpen (because I like my knives to be scary sharp before I use them for the first time as it makes keeping them sharp easier).

I stumbled across a mention about Longstrider doing some sharpening so I dropped him a PM to enquire. We agreed a very reasonable figure for him to sharpen it for me and to have a look and see if it would be possible to reprofile the tip.

So, off it went in the post to him.

It's come back with an absolutely mirror polished convexed edge with the tip reprofiled to a traditional drop-point curve; and MY GOD, IT'S TERRIFYINGLY SHARP. Arm hairs seem to fall off before the blade gets to them. Paper might as well not be there - there's so little resistance to the blade.

This pic DOES NOT do it justice!

If you have a blade that needs to be made scarily sharp, Longstrider is your man. Top work!

Thanks very much mate, you are a sharpening god!

Not just a sharp edge either. He'll discuss the blade profile with you and come up with something outstanding

Exactly so Mr Fluffy. There was a fairly lengthy exchange of PMs between Longstrider and myself, and as far as I am concerned he has surpassed everything I was hoping for on the sharpening and reprofiling of the blade.

I bow before his sharpening skills

There you are Ian, you've got it in writing

I've seen his attention to detail sharpening his cutting competition knife, and I was amazed . Just don't let a non-knife person try using a blade sharpened by Longstrider

Don't let a knife person use a blade sharpened by him either!

I was a little careless sitting at my desk flipping it open and closed idly, and it took a playful nibble of the side of one finger tip.... Didn't feel a thing, and boy was it a clean cut!

Re: Review of Longstrider's sharpening service

I have to thank you for the kind words Dave. I'm glad that you like what I did for your blade. I can see why you wanted to be shot of that slight recurve on the tip section. It must have been a real PITA to sharpen with just about flat hone in one of those jig-malarky things (Edge-Pro etc etc). The more typical drop-point type curve should be a lot easier to use and to deal with on a day-to-day basis.

As for it biting you I used to return any sharpened knives with a Band-Aid ready for use alongside them in the packing. (I kid you not) Then I thought "But they wouldn't send them to me and expect them back without a proper edge on would they?" and assumed that fingers would be kept clear of "the cutting bit" for a while.....
Maybe I'll have to start returning knives with a sticky plaster enclosed again !

Again, I thank you for the good words and the recommendation.
If it's not sharp, it's just a piece of metal.

If anyone wants to sample Longstrider's work and don't have a knife to send him, I've just reluctantly put this beauty with his superb work on it up for sale in the classifieds...
