Re: The JEST Way
Excellent stuff, thanks for posting this Dan. Sounds like you had a terrific experience with JEST.
I don't know what you pilot, but I assume you take a survival kit with you on your flights. What do you carry with you?Last edited by Nightfly; 18-01-10 at 02:37 PM.

Re: The JEST Way
Just the knife. It's all I need.
I pilot single engine light a/c, like C152, C172, C182, PA-28 and also badly maintained quicksilver u/l's.

Re: The JEST Way
Next time I am over (and not dodging acid throwers at your evening markets
), I will have to bring you a decent signal mirror to accompany your knife. I don't get to see much of your beautiful countryside from high up but flying VFR over there must be a great thrill!

I'm planning another trip in the last weekend of May. If you're in the region and want to come along, let me know.

Re: The JEST Way
I have just returned from another trip and it seems this may be the last. I was told that they are being pushed out of their fixed base and tribal lands by Treetop Adventures next door two years ago and now wants their camp and their forest. Treetop already put in an extensive zip line through the canopy, clear cutting paths through the old-growth trees for their Disneyland-style fun ride. The Aeta are to be relocated to a remote area without water electricity or good road access, essentially dispossessing them from lands hunted since their grandfathers' grandfathers' times and before. It's an unmitigatable Avatar-style tragedy, complete with bulldozers and buzzsaws.
I was also told that my original post here, which was converted into a booklet, was copied and is being used informally in the training of US forces under the Visiting Forces Agreement. I have since re-written the booklet as a more formal training manual which will be published and made available as a hardcopy and PDF. Initially it will be used as the training manual at the JEST Camp and if they are forced to leave, it may serve as their legacy.

ZDP,
excellent read from the start. Jungle is not my forte at all (No jungle in Jordan!), but this was a really useful learning update. Many thanks.
