It's very similiar to UK law Gurthang, with much greater tolerance in more rural areas. Hunting is widespread and of course a lot more people still work in agriculture. Even normal sports shops have big knife selections. Autos and suchlike are illegal, just as in the UK.

I'm sure Zackerty will be along soon to clarify further.

............I'll move this down to the Law forum after a while, so Gurthang doesn't think he's been deleted!

No worries mate, I'll move it now. Zack is probably asleep so give him a few hours and I'm sure he will give you a thorough answer. Where you off to in NZ? My folks live in Wanganui on the West coast of North Island.

I'm headed About 80km north of Auckland, I think the place is called Warkworth.
Going to NZ will be much better than most of the other options I had for a work placement, It didnt take long to decide between working on a deer farm in NZ or rearing pheasnts and partridges in Suffolk

    Re: New Zealand Knife law

    I am now awake, Danzo....

Overall Law here is similar to UK, but not so stressed.
There are no specific knife laws, just laws relating to dangerous or offensive weopon.

A hunter with a dead deer in his boot, with a 4 inch blade on his waist, driving home.... if stopped by Mr Plod, will have no problem. Walking into a pub on the way home... BAD idea! Remove blade and leave in car... okay.
The car is regarded as a safe place...

    Copied this off bladeforums...

I dont recall the laws in NZ, but I have carried my Microtech manual SOCOM as well as my large Sebenza there without any problem.....but it will pay to check it out. If this is your first trip to NZ, let me say that you will have a blast. The Kiwis are genuinely nice folks and the country is pristine. The fishing is tremendous. The NZ wine industry produces some great products, but do not make the mistake of trying to keep up with a kiwi as far as drinking goes....... I had some friends of mine from here move to NZ a number of years back. After I went to visit them a couple of times I liked it so much I bought a place there. It is that nice there. Have a wonderful time there, I am confident that you will.

    And off the web...

Never carry a gun or knife – the law regards them as offensive weapons, and they could be easily turned on you. Likewise, disabling sprays such as Mace and pepper spray are not legal for civilian use in New Zealand.

    Gurthang,

The fact that you will involved with the deer industry, will not guarantee that a knife in your pocket will not be regarded as dangerous or offensive, so if you have one, and you suspect trouble is abrew, get rid of it, ASAP. What I mean is, not to break the law, but for example....if you assist a copper in his duty, and the criminal is injured by YOUR knife, you WILL be charged by the Law! No, I know it does not make sense, but it is covered by the Law.

No pubs, public places, and NO AUTOMATICS!!!!!!
I carry my knifemaking business cards at all times, but that still is no guarantee.
