Which is best, 01 steel or D2 steel?

I have been talking (arguing) with a few mates this morning about the best metal for a Bushcraft knife.

I said D2 was best as it was harder and rusts less, my mate said D2 is too difficult to sharpen on a scandi zero D2 (eg Enzo) and therefore 01 steel is better.

I thought i would put it out there to see what you think.

    Cheers

I think D2 is best for you and 01 is best for your mate.

I once had a D2 scandi. Edge holding was very good indeed - sharpening on normal waterstones was very hard indeed It didn't need sharpening very often but when it did I dreaded doing it. In hindsight a decent set of DMT stones would have made it much easier.

    D2 is a fantastic steel.
He is hard to sharpen? this depends on the hardness.
My camp knife in D2 have a hardness of 57 HRC 58 max. T
    hey are easy to sharpen

a little blade can also be 60 HRC ...
I believe a knife should never be too hard

I have terrible problems with D2 chipping on the edge, regardless of the maker, so much so that I no longer will buy a knife in that steel..I think I'm probably the only one though!

If you do a little searching you'll find loads of threads here on BB with the simple theme: Stanless vs. Carbon

Re: Which is best, 01 steel or D2 steel?

I've heard a lot about this problem. My knives have never had this.
Probably the problem is in the hardening.
    I do:
    1030 x 15 min ... I make three steps of 2 minutes 450 600 and 820

cool with air and aluminum plates

    Tempering to 540 x 90 min
when the steel is cold I put it in the freezer for about 12 hours
then again in the oven at 540 x 90 min

so you have a hardness of 58 HRC about

I hope you understand what I said ....
