Hawk in the works
Hello everyone !
I have posted this elsewhere, but though you might like to see it here.
This is the head of a customer designed order. Making pieces to custome specifications is a much tougher task than just creating what you wish. I love making hawks as the only reason I took this order. It is much more fun to be unbound by set design. Alas I have enjoyed the experience and I'm looking forward to the next one.
The head is forged mild steel with an inserted and forge welded , high carbon bit. It has been coated with tool-black and submerged in bleach. I'm not positive of the exact formed coating , but it has a greenish gold hugh in the sunlight and is very tough. It resists abrasion greatly.
The haft will have a poured pewter mouthpiece on curly maple. The hawk will be fully functional if one so desired to smoke from it. Hope you enjoy.

Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow.
Do not walk beside me, either; just leave me the hell alone.

That’s a great piece of work I love it. I looked at your website and was very impressed with the stuff you make. Do you do all the leatherwork yourself?

Re: Hawk in the works
Now that is an ispirational item . I have a cheap hawk with a pipe in it , but found that the head started to work lose and lost the seal for the pipe .I only stuck it in the top of a post so i could fill the bowl without touching the blade ( the sweat of your pinkies ruins the blade very easily , and its a pain to polish out )

That's reallynice Mark. I like the finish a lot, now I could be showing my ignorance or just asking a stupid question (neither unheard of
) but what is tool black?

Re: Hawk in the works
Thanks Everyone,,
John , I do some leather work. Mostly bad
. Usually I rely on others for leatherwork.
Motorbikeman, Tool Black is just a chemical used to put a rustproof finish on steel. I think it is very similar to good old liquid blueing. I got the technique of aging in the bleach from my partner in crime, Chuck Burrows (Wildrose).
I just tried using the toolblack instead of the blueing, as it was what I had on hand.
It's fun to do. You never really know what kind of finish you will get with different alloying elements.
