Perhaps Mojo's comment was too sweeping. If he had said:

Sorry, but as far as I can see, the vast majority of people hadn't heard of him before Bear Grylls, and he owes his increased recognition to that model.

then I think it would have been a more fair comment.

This is the earliest reference that I can see to him on BB:

Unsurprisingly, it's about the Bear Grylls knife.

Post number 4 is interesting too.

    Re: Bayley Knife/Bear Grylls

I personally had heard of Rob Bayley before he was known as the maker of the "Bear Grylls knife" and before he was highlighted on BB. From the knives I have seen and handled Mr Bayleys level of workmanship is up there with some of the best makers in the UK.
Whilst his recognition must have increased due to the "Grylls" knife IMO this must surely have been a double edged sword due to the constant
"Bear Bashing" that goes on. Whilst there seems to be many Bayley knife fans, I imagine there are a fair few that are reluctant to show their own interest in the knife for fear of being ridiculed.
A recent thread shown here shows a nice knife which by the makers own admission is " in the style of Bear Grylls" it has only postitive comments, yet the original gets a lot of sniggers. Why

    Re: Bayley Knife/Bear Grylls

I suspect it may have something to do with the price tag on the Grylls knife.
Personally I think the knife and sheath look great (never had the pleasure of handling one), but I don't think I'd be willing to part with that amount of money to own one when there are so many excellent alternatives at less than half the price and same goes for the Mears Woodlore.

While I agree with your post on the whole, I disagree with the latter part. Does it get lots of sniggers? I don't think the knife itself is actually ridiculed that much.

    Re: Bayley Knife/Bear Grylls

Ah, looks like I owe Mojo an apology.

I've seen several of Rob Bayleys knives at meetups and had thought that pre-dated Bear Grylls connection.

    Sorry Mojo, I was wrong!
