Hudson Bay Tobacco/Tinder Box

Anyone have any experience of using a Hudson Bay Tobacco/Tinder Box, as in here

Can they still be used to make carcloth or does the magnifying glass mean you'd need a second tin?

Got to admire a website that will sell you a pebble for as little as $1.95

I'm having and using the Hudson Bay Tobacco box as a fire starter kit.
I never made charcloth in the tinder box, maybe it can be done, but i'm affraid the magnifying lens will collapse from heat.
I tried to get the lens out of the box, seperatly, so you could use it for making charcloth, but didn't work without risking the lens breaking.

My kit:

Nice work there - pretty much the sort of kit i want to carry too although I'm curious whats the kit on the right of the pic?

So I'll need a second tinder tin then - not sure its worth the hassel with the amount of Sun we get each year

Sorry but I am a tad late responding to this post!!! You can use this tobacco box as a tinderbox, but it will foul the surface of the burning glass. You do NOT heat the tin to prepare tinder, you DO NOT place it on the fire! Char your tinder material directly in the fire and then place it in your tinderbox and close the lid. When you make fire strike directly into the tinderbox. Replace lid after making fire.

Thanks LeLoup for theheads up I finally got one of these myself - realy digging the retro feel of it and am getting quite adicted to the old ways, need to track down a candle tinder box now - you know the one with the candle stick holder on the outside.

Anyway thanks for the advice - I picked up a small circular tin that fits inside the hundon to make charcloth

so in all i have a striker,2 flints a tinder tube, small tin and some jute the rest is filled with charcloth - I've also added a piece of leather cut to shape so the whole thing doesn't rattle around

still got to master its use....
