Re: Wolf Eyes Pilot Whale torch

Flippin Heck!
Sorry couldn't resist.
Excellent review and video, simple and to the point.
Battery magazine looks the same as the one from the Boxer HID with the little lights to say the batteries have juice.
Looks very nice indeed and with all the Wolf Eyes generally fit and finish is top notch.

Re: Wolf Eyes Pilot Whale torch

That was a good vid review mate, nice one. It's a nice looking torch and a bit smaller than I expected. Looking forward to seeing the beamshots.

Re: Wolf Eyes Pilot Whale torch

Just got back from Box Hill getting some beamshots.

But first, here's the "in the street" beamshots as close to matching the ones I did for the TK40 review (which were ISO 80 f2.0 / 0.5 second exposure). These were taken with ISO 80 at f2.8 for 1 second exposure, and the point of aim of the torch was on the road some distance ahead, as if using it while out for a walk.

HIGH

MEDIUM

LOW

(note that even though the camera hasn't really picked up anything much on the ground here, there was enough light in the spill of the torch beam to reflect back off the car numberplate)

Re: Wolf Eyes Pilot Whale torch

And now, here's the ones I just took at Box Hill. (unfortunately there were some chavs doing burnouts in the car park behind the target tree, so their car headlights show up in one of them, and I didn't notice until I got home).

Apart from the final picture (which was given a longer exposure just for fun), all these photos were taken at ISO 80 f2.8 with an 8 second exposure time (to minimise grain in the images).

First off, the control shot with no lighting.

And now, the PilotWhale on HIGH beam

100% size crop of the target tree from the above photo

MEDIUM beam

LOW beam

And just to get that "Death Star laser beam" look... High beam with a 15 second exposure

In each photo, the target clump of trees is 140m (459 feet) away.

Good pics Dave, really gives you an idea just how powerful this light is.

Re: Wolf Eyes Pilot Whale torch

How would you compare the beam of the Osram with a P7 or MC-E ?

I've not really used it for long runtimes yet, but after 5 minutes on high, the head was warm to the touch. I'll do some extended tests when I get a chance

Thanks mate. Although I think I with the ones at Box Hill I might have gone for an exposure time that was too long, and as a result made it seem brighter than it really is. (Although the 15 second Death Star one was deliberate - just so it'd look REALLY cool!).

That said, the 1 second exposure "street" ones seem a little too dark compared to reality!

Any Beamshot experts want to point me at the "perfect" camera settings in order to get a really true to life beamshot?

UPDATE - A quick search on CPF turns up one well respected reviewer who does his beamshots on ISO100 for 6 seconds or 8 seconds for long distance shots, or 4 seconds for closer shots, so I might not have been that far out!

I've not done any white wall artifact hunting yet, but in normal use it seemed like a nicer beam than the P7. Very nice hotspot and good flood.
