Handle is too 'pretty' for me. I'd like to see a hard-working version, preferably with some binding to protect it from knocks near the head.

very interesting head design, looks like it would be very useful as a camp/rough carpentry tool.

Ivan, Here's a link to my website that explains the forging process on axes and hawks. There are several pictures of those tongs being used. What is really nice about those tongs is I can use them for two different applications. One of the major problems I use to have when I did hawks or axes was holding onto the work. Gurbe, The hole or eye on this style ax is really pretty simple. After I get the head almost completed I'll then just drill the eye. I'll drill two holes with either a 1/2" or 5/8" drill bit. Say if I'm going with a 1/2" hole I'll first make the holes a 1/2" apart with a prick punch. After the holes are drilled I'll clean out the web with a carbide burr. Both the drilling and the cleanup are done on my drill press.

Gurbe, Here's a couple pictures of eye being made. I first drilled two 5/8" holes and I'm cleaning out the web with a carbide burr. Also a picture of what the head looks like after it has been heat treated and pretty much ground.

One of these days I must make a hawk. I remember when Jerry Fisk came over here about eight years ago and one of the first things he made was a little hawk out of a ball peen hammer. When I got back home I promptly bough a ball peen hammer but haven´t turmed it into a hawk yet - what a shame!
