Lightbulb Scandi Bolster Fit

Here's an illustration of how I have been fitting my bolsters.

It seems to work for me, though it might not be the perfect solution. Your comments, tips and advice remain most welcome.

Re: Scandi Bolster Fit

You should also try silver soldering or braising if you have the equipment.

Re: Scandi Bolster Fit

Interesting Zed, do you prefer this method to rebating the tang?

I mean like this....

Makes for a nice fit - especially if you use a file guide like this...

But the hardened jaws of a vice work well enough too.

Re: Scandi Bolster Fit

Martyn, I like that system, as it makes for a really good fit. I have that same filing guide, and if I really wanted to do it that way, I could even mill it to even greater precision.

The reason why I don't do that on scandinavian knives is that they tend to be thinner and often laminated too. I don't want to thin the tang or introduce a stress riser.

There's no reason it wouldn't work on a thick bowie tang, and I'd really be tempted to do it that way.
