Horn Strightning?

HI im new, my question, is there any tutorial for straightning bufflo horn?

I make crook walking sticks but have never had to straighten one but i would imagine a pan of boiling water would help obviously depends on how bent it is.
This method works with rams horn.

yes i agree with wolf, i always boil for about 2 minutes then clamp in a vise for about 30 minutes.

i have a bunch od horn to straighten out so i bought a little portable butane gas cooker and a load of tins of gas, it cost next to nothing from a local carboot sale.
the reason i bought it was, i was told that it smells awful when you boil it so it's best doing it outdoors, i didn't want to incur the wrath of 'her indoors' so took the cowards way out

here's some horn and antler that i've acquired whilst trying to turn my garage into a workshop

The smell ' is' awfull john.
I thought the buffalo you bought off me would have been on a knife by now

Cow horn straightens quite nicely with boiling water,but I find that deer (stag) does not straighten,at least axis deer which I have,and if put in a vice to do it it tends to crack!!

Horn are made from something similar to hair.
Axis and others are like bones.
You cant straight bone.
For buffalo, cow, sheep, I think that a little bit more heat is better. I put in the oven at 170 Centigrade. Than, when it´s soft, I put in the middle of two aluminium plates and clam. With a torch, I heat the plates. Then I put into water bucket. It stays straight for a long time.

here's a stick i bought a few years ago, i bought it just for the lovely carving of the foxes head but then i thought i would get into walking to get a bit fitter..

i didn't get walking and got fatter instead of fitter







i made a call to the ramblers association by the person that answered just went on and on and.........

Thats absolutly stunning John, I am in exactly same position GOT to exrecise (heart attacs) So started waliking a bit, Then daughter bought me a border terrier,(always wanted one) so get out quite a bit, Most of summer i spend in helmsley where i met Kieth pickering, His work is amazing, He made them for luke cassey, Harry potter wands and stuff, Sultan of somwhere rich ---- and on, He offered to make me a stick with border terrier head colour and everything from my dog sitting, And on seeing some of his work I was nearly there, Then came the tuff nit £149.00 quid, twelve months delivery, So i left it a bit! LOL, But if hand carved in wood yours looks on a par, what is handle below head, How is the balance ??? I have seen loads of resin heads about latley I suppose its a sign of the times.

i'm not too sure what the bit under the head is made of but the fingers sit into the ridges perfectly and make it really comfy to hold
the stick is around four feet in length and very lightweight, really well balanced,it would hardly be noticed if walking all day with it i reckon.

i think the cane bit is made of hazel or something similar...

i think the stick ended up at the far side of the spare room, behind my guns, guitars and the wifes boxes of teddy bears
